It’s a cool, calm, compact and „with plenty of time to think“ city. You might be unsure where to go first and your homemade checklist might get mixed up! Art in any of its forms, festivals, museums and cosy pubs & restaurants are everywhere. I could make a long list with things to do in the beautiful capital city of Sweden, but I will keep it short for now and recommend one of the museums that impressed me!
Situated next to the Stadsgårdshamnen shore between the Birka Cruises and Viking Line Terminals, the art nouveau style museum built between 1906-1910 and inaugurated in 2010 by the famous photographer Annie Leibovitz, hosts various exhibitions, photography courses and even live concerts. It is the biggest photography museum I have ever seen and while I was there, the whole space was allocated to a huge David LaChapelle exhibition.
The US born photographer is one of the worldwide famous ones since his pictures of Britney Spears, Eminem, Michael Jackson, Mariah Carey, Paris Hilton, Lady Gaga were published in thousands of magazines like Vogue, Vanity Fair, Rolling Stone, GQ or were chosen as ads for various luxury brands like LaChapelle’s shooting of Lil’ Kim for Louis Vuitton. Nudity and eye-popping visuals were also part of the exhibition and LaChapelle continues to be inspired by everything from art history to street culture, from the metaphysical to immortality, projecting an image of twenty-first century pop culture through his work.
It was the very first time when Fotografiska Museet offered its whole building to a single exhibition but it was really worth it. I appreciated the enormous photo shots, the attention to detail and the mixture of lights pointing out the very best out of the pictures.
Take your time and visit Sweden, you’ll be surprised how many stylish, good looking and friendly people you’ll meet over there! The winter is snowy but Stockholm is not that cold as you might expect. Prepare yourself for short days, big and delicious deluxe chocolate muffins, long and happy nights and then just let your mind flow!
